It must have been the December of 2018 when I last sat down and let my creative juices flow into the words. It was indeed a chilly night I remember so well. I was tossing in my bed, unable to fall asleep. A jar full of thoughts was floating in my head and I could not help but think of a way to let those thoughts out. I sat on my mattress and gazed at the night sky. I was expecting to see stars shining bright, but the sky that night was rather dark. It looked like a painter’s canvas, all in black, ready to be painted with colors. Disappointed, I turned away from the window, pulled my curtains, and grabbed my pen. I started to write my thoughts (which were millions at that point) — one at a time. I believe that was the last time I penned my thoughts so elaborately.
Life happened and I got so engrossed in chasing my dreams that writing was left behind in the papers — the memory of which is still etched in me. What I am referring to here did not happen in one night. It took time, almost two years before I completely broke off from writing. Isn’t the case with everything we love or love to do? How can we deliberately let go of something we cherish so much? It is a series of events that gradually compels us to leave what we love doing the most. Eventually, such events and things come our way whose priority precedes that of what we once loved to do. But this is not a predicament, nor it is for a lifetime.
Writing has always been a stress reliever for me. I have cherished it so much during my graduation days and after that. It is a fun and mentally stimulating activity that lets you think creatively and open out. In a way, it helps you clear your brain and your cognitive abilities improve slowly. Hence, after having a writer’s block for almost 3 years now, I wish to get back to writing. Here are some of the tips that I plan to use in order to start writing frequently:
- Starting small: Writing does not necessarily mean that one has to publish a blog. One might as well do that according to one’s will. However, if one has a massive writer’s block and perplexed about where to start, it is always a good idea to start by reading blogs. Reading is proportional to writing. In my opinion, it is a stimulant to writing. I have come to realize that the more I read, the better I can write. It can also be the other way around for some people. The idea here is to start reading and let it do the magic.
- Grabbing a pen and paper: Sometimes, all we need is to be reminded of the days when writing was a habit. What better way can there be than a paper and a pen? I am unsure of how much impact it would create in eliminating the block, but I do have faith in the power of reminiscence.
- Asking for external help: A little cheer from loved ones can do miracles. The confidence of others in you can make you do things that you otherwise thought would never have been possible. Some elements are definitely out of our control. But a small cheer from loved ones can help you get back to writing. Do not shy away to talk about your block with your loved ones. This would help clear the confusion that comes along and encourage you to take up writing again.
I strongly believe and go by the truth that writing can never be forced. It comes from within and lives there forever. So do not feel discouraged if some day you realize that you have a writer’s block. It is not permanent and mere efforts can help it wane.
Peace! Love! Joy!
